Contrast these two stories.
First, Great Britain where the subjects have been disarmed to “keep them safe.”
How did that work out for this 88 year old lady?
An 88-YEAR-OLD widow is lucky to be alive after being brutally assaulted by a masked intruder in her own home.
Evelyn Birchall, from Chorley, Lancashire, woke up in the middle of the night to find Andrew Hodgkinson, 36, in her home.
Preston Crown Court heard how he struck her in the face and body as she bravely tried to fight back.
Initially she feared he would rape her after she cried: “What do you want?” and he replied: “I want you.”
Hodgkinson, wearing a hoodie that covered his face, then demanded cash and erupted into a rage when the pensioner said she had none.
Mrs Birchall was then dragged off her bed to the floor as Hodgkinson went on to ransack and vandalise her retirement complex bungalow as she lay in agony.
After he ripped off the property’s alarm panel, Hodgkinson returned empty-handed and became further infuriated when Mrs Birchall screamed at him.
David Traynor, prosecuting, said Hodgkinson picked her up and threw her “as hard as he could” as she was propelled into the hallway.
The prosecutor said Mrs Birchall believed she momentarily lost consciousness after banging her head and came round once again to find the offender standing over her, she said, “with no concern for whether she was alive or dead”.
Hodgkinson eventually left the scene in the early hours of August 26 with an amount of jewellery, while Mrs Birchall managed to crawl to her next-door neighbour’s home and police were called.
He was traced after a manhunt and the stolen items were recovered from his home address.
Jailing him for six years and eight months, Recorder David Potter said it was a “truly terrifying ordeal” for his victim and following sentencing the investigating officer said he had never seen such levels of gratuitous violence in 27 years of service.
Hodgkinson, who has 17 convictions for 38 offences including robbery, affray and battery, posed a significant risk of causing future harm, said the judge, and must serve an extended licence term of three years when the Parole Board consider he is fit for release.
